All Or None of the Day: A Civil District Court judge in Dallas has announced that she will no longer be performing marriage ceremonies until Texas recognizes the right of same-sex couples to marry.
Speaking at a meeting of the Stonewall Democrats of Dallas, Judge Tonya Parker — the first lesbian elected county judge in Dallas — said she believes it is “oxymoronic” for her “to perform ceremonies that can’t be performed for me.”
To clarify her position, Judge Parker released a statement yesterday afternoon, in which she said that performing marriage ceremonies is not her duty as the Presiding Judge of a civil district court, but “a right and privilege” which she has chosen not to exercise.
She goes on to say that couples who enter her courtroom looking to get married are not turned away, but are instead directed to other judges.
